We talk about two characteristics more than any others: scalability and efficiency. They are not goals in themselves — they are the levers that produce the outcome clients actually care about, which is productivity.

Efficiency lowers the cost of doing the work as it is. Scalability lowers the cost of doing more of it. Optimize one without the other and you get a business that is either lean but fragile or large but wasteful.

Pulled together, they compound. A process that is both efficient and scalable produces more output per unit of effort and keeps doing so as the business grows — which is simply another way of describing productivity.

Two characteristics, one outcome. It is the equation behind everything we build.
